Text description provided by architects. The house is located on a busy commercial street in Hue City. This is a tube house, which is a very common type of house in Vietnam. The house was built for three members of one family, including an elderly couple and their daughter. The house was built with the aim of protecting people’s lives by connecting three important relationships:
relationship between people – The architecture of the house tries to bring generations together in the most natural way. The elderly couple’s bedroom is located at the back of the ground floor providing them with privacy and easy access. Immediately adjacent to it is the kitchen and dining room, the centerpiece of the new house. This is also where the elderly couple welcome some regular guests. This area is located in the middle of the house, under a skylight, and is always filled with natural light. This space allows the elderly couple to see and hear the daily activities of everyone in the house or visits from friends. This way, they won’t feel lonely anymore.
The daughter’s private spaces from the first floor upwards include her own living room, study and toilet. The daughter’s bedroom is located directly above the parents’ bedroom at a distance of 2.2 meters from the ground floor. Therefore, every night, the daughter can hear the abnormal breathing of her parents and immediately recognize it so that she can take care of them immediately. This is something very precious to her. These spaces help the daughter nourish her spirit and achieve her dreams and ambitions.
The relationship between man and nature – Although it is a long and narrow tube house located on a noisy and busy commercial street, the house still brings people as close to nature as possible. Depending on the location of the house with the back facing southeast, which is the direction of the cold winds, the building opens up the back facade to allow as much of this wind into the house. The living spaces are designed to be completely open and interconnected, so that these cool breezes can reach throughout the house.
The concrete ventilation system in the entire facade enables the building to receive light that is beneficial to people’s health in the morning, block all harmful solar radiation in the afternoon, and avoid getting wet due to rain. In addition, the stone walls and thick roof have good thermal insulation. These elements create a wonderful microclimate for the house. Although the summer is very hot in Hue, the family rarely uses air conditioning. There are three skylights arranged along the length of the house to help create living spaces that are always filled with natural light and well ventilated.
The relationship between people and the home – The house resembles a solid cave, giving the people living in it a sense of security and a peaceful living space. Quiet spaces with a cool microclimate help people relax and sleep through the night. Such a living environment filled with natural light and cool breeze helps people live a healthy life. This is also a place where people can take shelter from the epidemic. The material used for the house is black Hue stone, a local type of stone that is gradually being forgotten due to the spread of imported stones of various colors. This material creates a feeling of familiarity and closeness. It can be touched without fear of damage or staining. The building looks like a shirt specially designed for a family. The dimensions and space of the building are well suited to suit the height and needs of the members.
Some of the plants and vegetables grown in the house are edible, and some fish are raised in pots placed on the concrete skylight system in the back façade. This makes the house greener and cooler. Taking care of plants and fish makes people’s lives more wonderful. Day by day, people and home take care of each other, become closer, and from here love for each other grows. The house helps to harmoniously blend the three relationships of people, people, nature and people into the house, creating a happy and fulfilling life. By building this house, the architect hopes that this inspiring perspective of cohesive design can spread the idea of happy living everywhere, no matter how big or small the house is.
