London – Earlier this week, LATAM Airlines and Delta Air Lines announced that the Sao Paulo-Los Angeles route would be their first market together.
This means that LATAM will become the only airline to operate a non-stop flight between Brazil and Los Angeles and will use the Delta hub to offer more connectivity in the West Coast of America.
The initial flight frequency will be three times a week on a Boeing 777-300ER, with a capacity of 410 passengers (38 in Premium Business cabin, 50 in Economy+, 322 in Economy).
You will depart from São Paulo Airport (Guarulhos) at 11:05 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, arriving in Los Angeles at 7 AM the next day.
From Los Angeles, flights will depart at 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and arrive in São Paulo (Guarulhos) at 5:20am the next day.
Capacity upgrades on the way…
The two sides outlined the capacity upgrades that will be launched as this joint venture continues to develop:
- Atlanta – Santiago, Chile: Operation has increased from three weekly flights between Atlanta and Santiago, Chile, to daily service on the Airbus A350, which equates to more than 2,700 additional seats per week between its US hub and Arturo Merino Benitez Airport.
- Atlanta-Lima: Service will be upgraded to an Airbus 350 in February, which translates to more than 1,700 additional weekly seats so more customers can connect between Atlanta and Jorge Chavez Airport. The Delta Airbus A350-900 aircraft can seat 339 passengers and is equipped with Delta One, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin.
- New York – Sao Paulo: Delta’s three weekly flights between its hub in New York JFK and Sao Paulo have increased to daily service effective October 29 with an Airbus A330-300.
- Atlanta – Sao Paulo: On December 17, a second seasonal daily flight between Atlanta and Sao Paulo (GRU) with an Airbus A330 will begin.
- ATLANTA – RIO DE JANEIRO: The popular seasonal route between Atlanta and Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport (GIG) will resume on December 17.
- Miami-Orlando: Delta will launch new daily service between Miami and Orlando on Dec. 1.
- Miami Los Angeles: New daily service between Miami and Los Angeles will launch on December 17.
- Santiago – Los Angeles: From September 2023, LATAM Airlines Group will offer a total of five flights to Los Angeles International Airport. In total, it will add more than 900 seats with the two additional flights to the existing offering.
- São Paulo-Orlando: Starting in August 2023, LATAM Airlines Brazil will increase operations to Orlando International Airport, adding a fourth weekly frequency. The operation will be operated by Boeing 787-9 aircraft and will add an additional 600 seats to this flight path.
- Lima-Miami: Flights operated by LATAM Airlines Peru will increase from 14 to 17 weekly flights on Boeing 767 aircraft with a new cabin layout. This modification will add more than 1,300 weekly seats so customers can be better connected to destinations in North America.
- Lima – New York: The schedule will increase from 7 to 12 weekly flights on a Boeing 767 operated by LATAM Airlines Peru, equipped with the new cabin layout. From Lima, passengers will be able to connect to regional destinations on the LATAM network, such as Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, among others. In the opposite direction, flights that will connect in New York will be able to do so quickly to destinations in Delta’s network, such as Toronto, Boston and Washington. The modification will add more than 2,200 weekly seats so customers can be better connected to destinations in North America.
- Lima-Los Angeles: LATAM Peru will begin operating 7 to 14 flights per week, in a mix between Boeing 767s and 787s. This modification will add more than 3,400 seats per week so that customers can better connect to destinations in North America, such as San Francisco Las Vegas and Seattle. Meanwhile in Lima, they will be able to connect with regional destinations in the LATAM network, such as Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro and others.
The joint venture also stated that the aforementioned modifications will create an additional capacity of 23,000 seats per week.
It still seems clear that this joint venture looks really promising, especially for LATAM, which will be able to take advantage of a lot of connectivity options with Delta across the US and abroad.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what else the joint venture has in store for passengers, as this will prove to be a deadly combination within the Americas.
No doubt other competitors will tire about this and will have to see what they can do to match a joint venture for this aspect between Delta and Latin America.
