Textual description provided by the architects. The Jeddah studio draws inspiration from the Indonesian word “jeda,” which means “pause,” which goes against the logic of the place, which is as precise, productive and ever-progressing as the idea of the studio. Our approach at Jeddah Studios is also informed by such contradictions arising from the quality of serenity and sophistication that we observe in the true and dignified presentation of modest fashion. This synthesis directed Jeddah in creating her first collection in parallel with the process of building her own studio.
The Jeddah studio is designed to serve as a container for Jeddah’s wearables collection, with a dedicated gesture to hospitality as its core programming. The tea bar, located at the heart of the retail space, as an essential service contributes to embodying the values of humility, deliberately departing from the transactional style of modern retail. With minimal displays that allow each garment to stand out, a large painting titled “Stain” by artist Jaleh Adika was installed and highlighted in harmony with the tea set on the retail deck. The palette reflects the deep amber and brown color of the tannin, catechin and openness of the tea leaves, releasing a sense of disorder in the cold, stony nature of stainless steel and solid surfaces often used in retail tectonics.
Although the building is adjacent to a sewer corridor on its western wall, the interior design seeks to break free from the condition of typical department stores or shopping centers characterized by enclosed walls and extensive use of controlled lighting. Adding a 3 x 4 meter sash window to its west-facing wall facilitates the infusion of natural light while blocking expandable views from outside. These fragile and unstable margins allow the intensity and timing of sunlight to vary, creating a daily rhythm within the confines of the store. On a different scale, the use of cast resin in doorknobs and cloth hangers not only disrupts extreme formality, but also creates a link of vulnerability – to create trust and closeness with those who interact; Stainless tubes with transparent caps; Tempered glass with handcrafted handle; All the fabrics in between.
