Text description provided by architects. JUDO ESPERSSO DOJO is a 26 square meter community café located in the old urban area of Chengdu. The space itself is a regular square store that can be seen everywhere. The shop owner named “Judo” after director Du Qifeng, who said in the movie “Throw Down” that “Judo teaches you to fall,” and she hopes to have a relaxed and informal atmosphere here, where every guest can feel at home and find their own personal ways in “ “Judo”.

This is reminiscent of a construction site office, or a back alley. In the chaotic and complex urban landscape, what moves is the logic of operation and life hidden behind the shiny “veneer”.

Therefore, our design directly reveals the base and structure. The space retains the original state of the wall after removing the ceramic tiles, and the fire-resistant glass magnesium panels are pasted at the usage height; Through the hollow PC sheet on the upper surface, you can see the newly replaced insulating film, rectangular tube beam, exposed colored wires and semi-transparent EVA film cloth in the storage room; Recycled wood panels from the construction site are used on the floor. The furniture is made of aluminum profiles and paint-free multi-layer boards.

We do not make a sign on the front door, but display the rectangular tube beam directly. It’s best not to make those signs that are designed for the sake of making.

The door curtain is made by fashion designer Wang Yuanyuan. We make air holes on the thin transparent edges, sew them with braided polyester rope and steel angle, then fasten the door curtains through the fasteners. Users can flexibly open and close it according to the weather and seasonal needs. At the same time, the transparent film can also surround the interior space and create a light and comfortable atmosphere. “Judo teaches you how to fall.” Hopefully we can all find our own personal ways in this dojo.
