Exclusive: “Unreal Thoughts,” the documentary about the FBI takedown of USC football player turned drug dealer Owen Hanson that we first told you about, is currently filming as a docuseries for Amazon Sports.

Jodie McPhee Schultz is the director and Adam Ridley is the producer for Mark Wahlberg, Steven Levinson and Archie Gibbs’ Unreal Ideas, we’re told.

Hanson began distributing recreational drugs and stimulants to his college classmates during the early 2000s, eventually building a violent empire that spanned the United States, Central and South America, and Australia. Hanson was arrested in September 2015 and sentenced in late 2017 to more than 21 years in federal prison, and was ordered to pay $5 million in criminal forfeiture, which included $100,000 in gold coins, luxury vehicles, jewelry, vacation homes, sailboats, and interests in numerous From companies. The FBI teamed up with the New South Wales Police Force in Australia to arrest Hanson and uncover an illegal sports gambling, money laundering and drug trafficking enterprise of thousands of kilograms of illegal drugs that led to Hanson. More than 21 of his companions were also arrested.

The key factor in Hanson’s arrest was high-stakes Philly gambler turned FBI source RJ Cipriani, also known as Robin Hood 702, whom the drug lord charged with gambling $2.5 million in a money laundering scheme. Robin Hood 702 lost money at blackjack, which prompted Hanson to make death threats, including sending Cipriani photos of his dead mother’s mutilated tombstone and a video showing beheadings.

Unrealistic Ideas offered Cipriani to be part of their Amazon documentary series, but he declined. He is currently developing a scripted series about his involvement in Hanson’s arrest, Win the jackpotat Sony Pictures Television with Nicholas Stoller and his Stoller Global Solutions partner Connor Welsh, as well as Jimmy Caniff, who executive produces with Cipriani.

“While this will be a fantastic docuseries, I unfortunately cannot participate without a credit and an executive producer fee, and have already partnered with my dream collaborator Sony Pictures Television, Nick Stoller, and their partners to push this story as a scripted series.” Instead of docuseries.

Among Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas documentaries are the HBO docuseries, Million dollar macwhich received five Emmy Award nominations, nominated by the International Development Association Run this city And private discovery Lost Lincoln.

Amazon Sports and Unrealistic Ideas have returned Deadline’s request for comment.
