Amid concerns over deteriorating air quality, the Delhi government on Saturday issued an advisory urging people to avoid morning walks and other physical exercises in view of the health emergency. The advice also stressed that pregnant women, patients with underlying medical conditions, children and the elderly should proceed with caution and avoid exposure to air pollution.

To avoid exposure, the Delhi Health Department added that people should “avoid places with high air pollution such as slow and congested traffic routes, areas near polluting industries, construction/demolition sites, etc.”

The advisory also said people should avoid physical exercise such as walking outdoors in the morning and late evening, jogging and running, “particularly during days when AQI is high.”

The government also advised people not to smoke tobacco products, avoid burning mosquito coils and incense sticks indoors, and stop burning wood, leaves, crop residues and waste.

The bulletin also asked people to wash their eyes with running water, gargle regularly with lukewarm water, and eat a healthy, balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables.
