  • Solar technology to provide refrigerated trailers with a speed of up to 9.8 kW, providing approx. 3400 liters of fuel and reduce approx. 9 tons of local CO2 emissions per year per vehicle
  • Sono Motors and CHEREAU SAS announce the joint production of the first solar-powered trailer with 58.9 square meters of solar panels
  • The trailer will be shown for the first time at IAA Transportation 2022 and will be used to assess the technical and economic feasibility of integrating a custom solar power solution to a large scale chain vehicle.
  • The market for refrigerated trailers is expected to grow strongly due to the increased demand for pharmaceuticals, frozen products and fast food

MUNICH, Germany, June 1, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Sono Motors, the company that aims to revolutionize the future of solar-powered transportation, is expanding its solar business by entering the growing refrigerated trailer market with Sono Solar Technology. own, to further reduce global fossil fuel emissions. The company has signed a purchase agreement with The Reefer Group, a leading global manufacturer of cryogenic structures, to expand the total number of partners of Sono Motors’ solar business to more than 17 globally. As part of this collaboration, the two companies will build their first trailer with CHEREAU SAS, a subsidiary of France’s Reefer Group, to conduct extensive testing to assess the technical and economic feasibility of integrating a customized solar power solution for a large-scale series vehicle. Solar integration of the trailer refrigeration unit will provide an additional 9.8 kW of capacity, providing a potential fuel economy of approximately 3,400 liters (up to 8,475 in peak conditions) and potentially reducing domestic CO2 emissions by approximately 9 tons per year per vehicle compared to trailers with refrigerated units operating Diesel.1

“This partnership is a huge step for Sono Motors, as we open up a whole new industry for our highly flexible and proprietary Sono Solar technology. We offer a lightweight and adaptable platform that is ideal for refrigerated trailers and allows customers in the transportation industry to reduce costs and emissions across their fleet. We are extremely pleased To allow us to collaborate with such a respected manufacturing partner as CHEREAU and be able to work with them to create a more sustainable future,” says Lauren Hahn, Co-Founder and CEO of Sono Motors.” We look forward to all the opportunities this can create partnership”.

“Sono Motors’ solar integration solutions are the perfect solution for our trailers. We are pleased to be able to work with Sono Motors to create the future prototype that will be part of our pilot fleet of sustainable refrigerated trailers. This is a huge step towards making commercial mobility more sustainable and reducing emissions,” says Damien Destremau, CEO of The Reefer Group and CHEREAU.

Solar Trailer Premiere at IAA Transportation 2022

Sono Motors will outfit the roof and sides of an existing CHEREAU trailer with 54 solar modules using a VaPV (Vehicle Applied Photovoltaic) process developed specifically for use in cargo box vehicles such as the CHEREAU Refrigerated Trailer. The automotive grade high-efficiency solar modules cover an area of 58.9 square meters and will provide up to 9.8 kW of maximum power at peak performance. Solar energy will be used to power the cooling unit by charging the battery. This potentially saves approximately 3,400 liters of fuel and offers the potential to reduce domestic CO2 emissions by about 9 tons per year per vehicle, compared to trailers equipped with diesel refrigeration units. Solar “backpack CO2” trailers, that is, emissions from production, once amount to approximately 6.5 tons of CO2 and can be offset after a short operating time of less than one year. The trailer’s planned premiere at IAA Transportation 2022 in Hanover will be followed by extensive testing during a multi-month field trial by a CHEREAU customer in France. Part of the testing process is to validate figures for energy revenue and fuel savings that are based on internal calculations including weather and system efficiency assumptions.

Optimized solar technology for sequential integration

For mass production of chains, Sono Motors develops its unique solar technology on refrigerated trailers. According to the innovative technology, it is possible to achieve energy savings of up to 80% compared to diesel.2

Significant market potential for cryogenic solar technology

The market for refrigerated trailers is expected to grow strongly due to the increasing demand for pharmaceuticals, frozen goods and fast food. In addition, fuel costs are rising and price pressures are rising. Sono Motors works to counter increasing fuel costs and CO2 emissions with efficient solar energy.

Sono Solar – Sono Motors’ solar business unit – is a one-stop shop for in-vehicle solar energy integration, with a mission to make every vehicle a solar powered vehicle. Its solar technology has been developed to enable seamless integration into different types of vehicles to reduce the impact of carbon dioxide emissions and pave the way for climate-friendly mobility. Sono technology is suitable for integration into existing vehicles as well as for production-ready development and integration into new vehicles during production. Known for its polymer-based solar technology, Sono Motors develops various technology solutions suitable for different vehicle bodies such as trucks, trailers, vans or buses.

Sono Motors has already signed more than 17 commercial contracts with companies such as MAN, easyymile and Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (Munich Transport Company – MVG). A complete Sono Solar solution includes a customized concept including solar modules, power electronics, information and data technologies, mechanical and electrical integration as well as after sales services.
