This green-roofed Danish beach house exudes sustainable sophistication

Set amidst the picturesque hills of Jutland, Denmark, Heatherhill Beach House is a testament to the seamless integration of traditional Danish aesthetics with contemporary design elements. Featuring a green roof and a quiet central interior design concept, this holiday home, designed by Norm Architects, offers a peaceful coastal retreat.

Heatherhill Beach House includes many sustainable features, including a sedum-inhabited green roof that helps regulate interior temperatures and mitigate stormwater runoff. The house was built mostly using wood, with the exterior sheathed in cedar, providing durability and weather resistance.

Inside, wash-treated Douglas fir panels decorate the floors, walls and ceilings, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The house is also strategically located on the plot to maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by the peaceful atmosphere that permeates throughout Heatherhill Beach House. Norm Architects integrated the structure into the landscape, minimizing its environmental footprint while maximizing its visual impact. The team strategically arranged the home’s two volumes to optimize interior flow and exterior views, ensuring that every corner offers a stunning view of the stunning landscape.

Wood floors, Douglas Fir walls and ceilings add rustic charm, along with a cozy fireplace nook. Ample built-in storage solutions maintain a clean, clutter-free environment throughout the home. The sunken living area transitions seamlessly into the minimalist kitchen, where a harmonious light color palette and ample natural light create an airy and inviting atmosphere.

Ordinary architects

True to the spirit of the house, the floor plan elegantly blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor. This is also highlighted in the bathrooms, by incorporating natural elements and expansive windows. One of the bathrooms has an outdoor shower.

The architects took a holistic approach, exploring the essence of a traditional Danish summerhouse while injecting it with contemporary elements. The result is a home that feels timeless and fresh, offering a peaceful retreat amidst Jutland’s wild nature.
