Sturgill Simpson comes out of pseudo-retirement to be one of the headline stars at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, California, August 9-11. He will also be joined by the legendary lineup of his backing band, including guitarist Lore Guamets, Kevin Black on bass, and Miles Miller on drums. This will be Sturgill’s first full performance in three years, and even longer since he’s toured fully.
Kevin black was one of the secondary members of sturgill’s first band called sunday valley before his solo career followed through High-peaked mountain Era. Black currently tours regularly with Margo Price.
Laur Joamets joined Sturgill during Transformed sounds era, and quickly set the country music world on fire before falling out with Sturgill following their legendary performance at the Grammy Awards in 2017. Laure has played with several other projects in Nashville since then. Miles Miller continues to serve as Sturgill’s bandleader, and began his solo career in 2023 with his debut album Solid gold Produced by Sturgill.
The announcement comes after a morning of wild speculation surrounding Sturgill-Simpson’s camp. On Monday, April 22, a countdown clock appeared on the home page of Sturgill Simpson’s website, counting down to 10 a.m. on Tuesday. However, the clock was not set for a specific time zone, and the announcement ended up being revealed at 10 a.m. PT. However, some were still a little disappointed that Sturgill Simpson’s announcement wasn’t a more extensive tour, or an announcement of new music. But Sturgill promised that his solo music career was pretty much over. Also, Outside Lands is considered indie rock. The only country-adjacent acts on the huge bill are Charlie Crockett, Paul Cauthen and Katie Pruitt, making it difficult for some country fans to pull the trigger on tickets to a show for which they won’t know most of the names. Post Malone is also scheduled to appear as part of the “Special Country Set.” Maybe it would be great, but so far, Posty’s “Country” outing with Hardy and Morgan Wallen has been a bit underwhelming.
