Woman in an Armchair by Pablo Picasso (1909-1910)

As a manga artist, when I look at this painting, I wonder if it would sell if it was drawn in manga. Will the magazine accept it? I kind of doubt it, but there’s something very important about this painting. In fact, it stands out. In particular, if there is furniture around, this palette will be better – or rather, it will dominate the interior design. If there was, I think the house would sell.

With its charm, it may attract those who appreciate art, and perhaps tempt someone who finds the woman depicted in this painting beautiful or beautiful, to buy it. They might really see it as a piece of art. But I think Cubism is most attractive when displayed in the home. I’m not an art collector, but if I were to buy a piece of art, it would be a cubist work.

If you have such a painting in your home, I think it will change the character of the place. The amazing thing about Picasso is that he captures a wide range of emotions at once. It is as if he is writing through his art about the mind or thoughts of this woman in the painting. This is what I feel he is conveying in this painting. For example, maybe the woman is sad, or maybe there is a mysterious past, I feel like it depicts multiple emotions that make you imagine different things. In Picasso’s case, this may be his greatness. From my perspective as a manga artist, at least.

Bust of a Woman, by Pablo Picasso (1907)

What I really like about this painting, or what I find surprising, is that even though it’s just a regular sitting pose, there’s a little bit of posing going on. First, her chest position is unusually high. I think it seems to have been emphasized for balance, but it also contributes to the unique character. Then there’s this kind of look where you’re looking back or to the side, but it also looks like the Mona Lisa, slightly tilted forward.

Also, in manga, as you know, it’s mostly drawn from the reader’s point of view, like this (points forward). But that’s because it’s manga or a magazine cover, right? When you hang a picture on the wall, if you draw the eyes too clearly, it can be kind of scary when they’re too obvious. As if he was always staring at you.

Picasso seems to have darkened that area. He painted very large eyes but only in brown and black, which I think is sentimental cubism. It allows you to imagine different feelings, such as this woman’s secret, or what she might be looking at from a distance.

What I really like is the nose in this painting. See how it stands out here? If you paint this area normally, it will look normal. But the way it’s done, with that kind of explosive touch, makes it quite unique. If it’s just about the cheeks, the palette may look simple and somewhat uninteresting. But the face also looks surprisingly cute, doesn’t it? The way some parts are flushed pink, and even the mouth has a kind of appeal to it. I think he’s very charming.

And then, the background, it’s a golden twilight, right? There seems to be an aura or light emanating from it. There’s also the area around her chin, with a mix of blue, and it’s all part of the feeling she’s giving off. Love her. I think it’s great. strong. I feel like it’s probably intended to promote balance and mystery.

The City of Paris by Robert Delaunay (1910-1912)

This is a painting of three nearly naked women, called the Three Graces, dancing. They’re basically rotating. Its rotation is integrated with elements such as the sky, and perhaps the trees in the garden. In addition, the landscape and buildings seem to blend into one image, merging and then disintegrating in this one painting. I think that’s probably the intent here.

I think what this depicts is the flow of time or history. It’s about deconstructing these landscapes and integrating them into this rhythmic flow, giving a sense of the passage of time. From this painting, I feel the flow of time in a city like Paris, and it seems that it is trying to express something very deep.

Jojo Lands by Hirohiko Araki (2023)

So, coincidentally, apart from the Cubism exhibition featuring works by the Center Pompidou, I happen to be painting in a Cubist style in my ongoing works. This is a copy of the manga I brought with me. It may be a bit small to see. It’s a manga page where this evil enemy attacks, and this guy can transform into the sky.

I wanted to paint a scene of flight, birds and clouds together, but with a person inside. While drawing something like this, I thought it looked like cubism, and as I was doing it, I was asked to come to today’s class.

You can see the clouds and buildings. Maybe I was a little influenced by this style. It is very difficult to draw it combined with clouds. Really challenging. I thought it looked similar to Cubism, so I went with it. It wasn’t really planned, it just happened.
