The Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn want you to know that what the world needs right now is…love.

That’s the message of the first trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which sees Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role as Arthur Fleck (who later becomes Batman’s infamous foe) teaming up with Lady Gaga as the equally devious Harley Quinn.

The dark and gritty footage begins at Arkham Asylum — where the Joker is locked up at the end of the first film — where Arthur Fleck has a deranged “meet-cute” with another patient (you guessed it, Gaga’s Harley Quinn). After a chance encounter, they plan to ditch their straight jackets and face the world outside their padded cells. This leads them to the streets of Gotham, where they dance and spin around the city.

“I’m nobody. I’ve never done anything in my life like you,” Harley Quinn, shooting herself in the head with a finger gun, tells the Joker.

The first film was a volatile origin story for the Joker, a struggling comedian and part-time clown named Arthur Fleck. In the sequel, he takes his turn on the road and performs on all kinds of stages with Harley Quinn as his crazy muse. However, in this cinematic adventure, he doesn’t seem so alone.

“I’ll tell you what’s changed,” Joker says in the trailer. “I’m not alone anymore.”

Director Todd Phillips premiered the footage at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners. Although the original 2019 “Joker” film was billed as a “one-off,” Phillips said he and Phoenix had always talked about doing a sequel.

“We liked the character of Arthur very much, but we didn’t want to jinx it [original] Phillips said. “We cast Gaga because she’s a witch.”

Little is known about the plot of the sequel, which is said to be a jukebox musical. Phillips said the rating isn’t entirely accurate, though it will feature a lot of song and dance numbers.

“Music is key,” Phillips says. “It doesn’t deviate too much from the first movie.”

“Joker” was a massive hit, earning $1 billion at the global box office, and is the first R-rated film to cross the $1 billion mark. The film received 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won two awards (Phoenix for Best Actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir for Original Score).

“Joker 2” will premiere on the big screen on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after the first film. The original cost $62.5 million to produce, an unusually conservative budget for a comic book adaptation. Due to its enormous financial success, the follow-up was awarded an A a lot A larger price tag of $200 million.

Footage from ‘Joker’ debuted as part of Warner Bros.’ Presentation for exhibitors. The studio also has “Beetlejuice 2,” “Horizon: An American Saga” and “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” on its 2024 slate.
