PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Throughout 2024, the Portland Art Museum will open five new and old galleries to art lovers visiting its downtown campus, as well as those attending a major art event taking place in Venice.

Here’s more on what people can expect from the upcoming collections.

Open from: January 25 to November 1

After closing for one month due to the construction of the Rothko Pavilion, “Throughlines: Connections in the Collection” will reopen in a few weeks. The gallery displays a variety of artworks from different locations, cultures and eras. PAM members can learn more from the group’s curators during an event in early February.

Open from: March 30 to August 31

After being displayed at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, this footwear exhibition is moving from one “sneaker” city to another. The “Future is Now: Virtual Sneaker to Latest Kicks” exhibition will showcase nearly 60 innovative designs that herald a new era in footwear.

“The provocative exhibit features digitally designed and 3D-printed shoes, sneakers made from mushroom leather and reclaimed oceanic plastic, and shoes created specifically for the metaverse,” museum leaders said.

Open from: From June 1 to September 15

This European collection, organized by the Brooklyn Museum for the first time, will highlight some 60 pieces of art that reflect the modernist genre. Along with Claude Monet and Henri Matisse, the “Monet to Matisse: French Contemporaries” exhibition will also feature artworks by Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall and Edgar Degas.

Open from: April 20 to November 24

Over the summer, it was announced that the Portland Art Museum and previously featured artist Jeffrey Gibson have been selected as U.S. representatives for the 60th Venice Biennale. You’ll have to travel to Italy to see the major art event in person, but Gibson’s work is expected to “invite reflection on individual and collective identities” using sculptures, paintings and multimedia installations.

Open from: From September 7 to January 10, 2025

“’60s Psychedelic Rock Posters and Costumes” is inspired by the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, an area once defined by its association with rock ‘n’ roll and hippie-like fashion. The exhibition will include more than 200 rock posters and 20 styles that defined the era.
